Chapter Fourteen

Neither of them said a word as they made their way up the long dirt road to the main lodge of Florida Forever. Laura had to wonder what the hell Jillian was thinking. She had just spent the short drive reliving the moment her fear of heights was born, and now they were in the parking lot of a zip line adventure park. Up until now, Laura thought Jillian was the sane one between them. Although by the looks of her white-knuckle grip on the steering wheel, she might have been having second thoughts.

“I’m going to assume we’re here for the swamp buggy tour or the horseback riding?”

Jillian turned her head toward Laura but didn’t unlock her fingers from the wheel. “Why would I need your help with riding a horse?”

“I don’t know, but it seems like you might need my help driving you to the hospital because I think you’ve lost your damn mind. Zip lining?”

Jillian let go and turned in her seat to face Laura. “When you asked me what I was afraid of I realized that here I was trying to help you overcome this monster you’ve been fighting for a decade, and I had no point of reference.”

“So, you thought this would what? Help?”

“Basically. Although now I’m wondering why I thought that.” Jillian scrunched her face.

“Look, it’s a sweet gesture. But you don’t need to do this.”

Jillian took Laura’s hand in hers. “No, I don’t need to. But I want to. You’re the bravest, most fearless woman I’ve ever met.”

Laura scoffed. “I’m absolutely not fearless. Stubborn, emotionally unstable, and delusional, yes. But not fearless.”

“Except you are, and in spite of it you keep going. Every day you wake up with the courage to try even when all the odds are against you.”

The words took Laura off guard. She only ever counted her successes as worthy of her end goal. She never considered that the simple act of trying at all was in itself an achievement. Her failures so often outnumbered her accomplishments that she always felt two steps behind on progress. Yet here Jillian was, knowing all of Laura’s attempts and setbacks, and still giving her credit for all of them.

“Jillian, that doesn’t mean you have to throw yourself off scaffolding. Why not start small, like climbing a ladder or something?”

“Is that what you would do? Start small?”

Laura never did anything small. Which explained why all her mistakes were so big. “You’re taking advice from the train wreck with PTSD? What are you trying to prove? You haven’t been concerned about heights since you were twelve years old. Why now?”

“You’ve put more faith in me than anyone ever has, but I’ve done nothing to earn that.”

“And you thought this was the best way to do that?”

“You know I was trying to make this a grand gesture of trust, and you are screwing that up for me.” Jillian waved her arms around and they both laughed.

“Well, why didn’t you just say that?” Laura asked as she got out of the truck.
